Why You Should Be Using pH Balanced, Acidified Body Wash

Looking for the right pH balanced soap? Learn about base and acidic body wash – and how Puracy formulas are designed to improve skin and scalp health.

Over the past few years, the demand for pH balanced body wash has exploded. And while finding the right ph balanced soap or acidified body wash is important for skin health, it can be hard to wade through the buzzwords and downright misleading statements.

How Do You Measure pH?

The pH scale runs from 1 to 14, with purified room temperature water listed as the most neutral solution (7). Any solution below a 7 is considered acidic while any solution above a 7 is alkaline.

No matter the substance, a one-point jump is equivalent to a ten-fold change. For example, milk (approximately 6) is 10 times more acidic than water (which is a 7). Lemon juice has a pH of about 2, meaning that it’s about 50 times more acidic than water.

The pH of Healthy Skin: Is Alkaline or Acidic Skin Better?

Most experts state that healthy skin pH falls somewhere between 5.4 to 5.9. Some studies indicate that healthy skin may be even more slightly acidic (ie. below 5).

If you're struggling with dermatitis, dry patches, premature aging, fungal/bacterial infections, or eczema, you may have alkaline skin. There are plenty of benefits of slightly acidic skin, but the biggest are reduced flaking and greater moisture retention (thanks to improved lipid layers).

What's the Average pH of Body Wash?

Multiple studies reveal that the average pH level of body wash is between 9 to 10. Highly alkaline soap can cause dehydration, irritation, and may even alter healthy bacterial flora (leading to inflammation and breakouts).

The Benefits of Acidified Body Wash

When choosing a product, here’s why you should opt for an acidified body wash for your daily washing routine.

  • Maintain Healthy pH Level

When used correctly, an acidified body wash should help your skin maintain a healthier pH range. This is exactly why our team of biochemists developed our pH balancing body wash with:

  • Coconut-based cleansers to gently cleanse away impurities.
  • Himalayan sea salt to balance and exfoliate.
  • Vegetable glycerin to soften and nourish skin.
  • Repair a Damaged Skin Barrier

Acidified products are usually formulated to help rebuild your skin barrier, if it's been damaged by synthetic fragrances or harsh sulfates. These milder cleansers use gentle, plant-based ingredients to moisturize and build-up natural oils in your skin.

  • Reduce Body Odor

The right body wash can also help tackle unsavory smells after a tough workout or long hike. If you're concerned about body odor, an acidified body wash can help lower your pH level, making it harder for odor-causing bacteria to thrive
